Christmas Week Four: Hope

christmas_treeIt’s Christmas Eve. The tree is lit. The preparations are winding down. Folks are making their way home whether it is across town or halfway across the globe.

Reflecting now on Christmas Eve and the Day to come and all that it means is so different from just a year ago. Last Christmas Eve I didn’t even attempt to write a post because I could not see through the emotional haze to clearly express what I was feeling about spending the day on my own. This year there will be the family Christmas I hoped would come.

While the specifics differ every Christmas season brings circumstances to many people and families that put them on strange and unfamiliar paths; often paths they could never have imagined they might travel. The good news is that the strangeness and rockiness of the unforeseen path don’t last forever. It may take more than one Christmas to move past this season of uncertainty and teetering faith but one day this will be a distant memory replaced with new meanings and new joys.

The thing about Christmas that can help us at times like this is the message of hope that Christmas is all about. Christmas is because God has not given up on us yet and that means we don’t have to give up on ourselves either. That is such a hopeful thought; and it is just enough for today.

May all of you experience in a personal way this year the hope that is Christmas.
